Garden Grounds at Providence Hospital
Every 36 seconds a person dies in the United States dies from heart disease (Thomas 2020).

Cardiovascular disease or heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States (Thomas 2020).
Heart Disease Costs Americans $219 billion for care each year (Thomas 2020).

Currently over 30.3 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (Heart Disease 2020).

Problem: Heart Disease in the United States
The American lifestyle including diet choices, smoking, and use of alcohol contribute directly to the amount of Americans with cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease affects millions of American's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Through working in the hospital, it is clear that many people do not understand the reality of the implication their daily lifestyle choices have on their overall well being. Heart disease is the umbrella term for many different heart conditions including: hypertension (high blood pressure), coronary artery disease, congenital heart diseases, and congestive heart failure. Heart disease negatively affects millions of American's quality of life. The current most used treatment methods include high blood pressure medications, angioplasty, heart valve surgery, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery. However, these treatments due not cure the disease itself. This leaves most Americans to struggle daily with heart disease complications over the course of their lives. Often times American's hold the key to their cardiovascular health in their own hand. The key is lifestyle change. The prevalent issue of heart disease can be managed longterm through daily healthy lifestyle choices including consumption of a healthy diet an exercise. My goal is to provide holistic care to patients with heart disease through the implementation of indoor and outdoor gardens at Providence Hospital. The creation gardens within the hospital environment would be designed to grow foods for patients, allow patients to assist in tending the garden, and provide a mental health space.

Recommendation to Address the Problem
Hospital gardens will provide patients with beautiful natural views that can reduce stress and provide a space for meditation, reflection, and prayer within the hospital. It is important for all patients to have space within in the hospital in which they are able to sit in a calm environment. The calming environment of gardens creates a relaxing space for both the patients and their families to destress in the stressful hospital environment. The hospital setting is often extremely traumatic and taxing. The stressful environment of the hospital has the ability to effect the healing process of the patients (Franklin 2012). The addition of gardens also has the ability to aid in mental healing of the hospital staff as well as the patients (Franklin 2012). The mental health benefit of the gardens provides a healthy space for all patients at the hospital including heart disease patients. The physical beauty of the garden will be designed to address spiritual and mental well-being. In addition to the beauty of the plants, some of the plants planted will also include produce or food.
The fresh produce created by the garden will provide patients with healthy and fueling food options to help health the body through food. The gardens will provide healthy produce in which healthy meals will be created for patients. This is especially important for cardiovascular patients because a healthy diet is known to help lower cholesterol and weight among many other benefiting factors. A plant based diet can have powerful effects on the human body. The produce grown in the gardens will be cooked and served to the patients within the hospital. Ideally enough produce will be produced from the garden in order to provide three healthy meals each day to all patients. Served with the meal will include a small card explaining the nutritional value of the food the patient is consuming along with the benefits to the patient’s health. Healthy plant-based food has the ability to heal the body from the inside out. The meals will be designed to heal the boy and taste amazing.
The outdoor and indoor garden spaces will also provide space for patients to take walks. Taking a walk to get some exercise is extra important for people with heart disease. Doctors could even prescribe heart disease patients with a garden walk as part of their treatment on their path to healing. In addition since the gardens will need to maintained, patients would be able to sign up for garden shifts. This would give patients that are able an opportunity to help out.
Combined with the delicious taste of the healthy meals, the educational component of healthy lifestyle choices, and exercise opportunity, the gardens at the hospital would provide natural healing to both heart disease patients and other patients at the hospital. It is my hope that the new environment created within the hospital with the addition of the gardens would spark patients interest passively about healthy lifestyle changes in order to improve their overall health. The garden would peacefully treat all aspects of health including mental, spiritual, and physical, and naturally education patients on healthy lifestyle choices.
Implementation/Detailed Plan
-
Creation of indoor and outdoor gardens.
-
In order to create the garden we can collaborate with sustainable Carolina. Many of the plants will require starter seeds and some of the plants can be propagated to save money through connections.
-
-
Some of the bigger plants can be requested through donations and fundraising.
-
To fundraise for the gardens Providence could collaborate with UofSC Carolina in order to involve students on campus.
-
-
Previous patients can help maintain the garden to provide a greater sense of community. Patients would be able to sign up as volunteers both while they are in the hospital and after they leave the hospital.
-
The physical activity of working in the garden will also benefit the cardiovascular health of patients.
-
-
The crops produced from the garden will be used to cook meals and served to heart disease patients.
-
Education cards about how the food helps treat the body will be provided with each meal.
-
-
Specific space for mediation, prayer, reflection for spiritual and mental healing in designated places throughout the indoor garden
-
-
Signs within these areas of the hospital stating the type of space and stating that they are quiet spaces.

Evaluation
To determine the success of transforming Providence hospital into a garden hospital, a survey would be sent to patients, families, and staff. The survey would consist of questions including overall experience, personal evaluation on health, and informed learning of health eating choices. Since the concept of a garden hospital is not the current standard, the data collected on overall success would be shared with other hospitals. If patients and staff found the garden environment effective in de-stressing and a benefit to their overall health then it would be promising data to share.
Key Insight #1

Social Norms and Cow Tongue Soup
In order to accommodate for different cultures, a variety of plants from all over the world would be implemented into the garden. This would include plants that produce foods naturally grown in other countries. The crops produced would create healthy meals that could be recognized by diverse cultures. The garden will be designed to create a community that fosters holistic healing for patients and their families of all diversities and cultural backgrounds. The goal is to build a garden environment that is inclusive to all patients and their families. A garden that produces foods and displays plants that are common in many different places around the world.
Key Insight #2
Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
The garden will provide comfort for patients and families as they experience the uncomfortable and difficult realities of the hospital experience. For patients who are able to assist with the garden they are able to tend to the garden. This gives patients an opportunity to participate in physical activity and get up and out of their bed. The garden would all patients to find enjoyment and comfort within their uncomfortable experiences within the hospital. Patients that are able to assist in the garden are able to control one part of their day, have fun, and participate in physical activity. The garden would provide comfort and relief in the unfamiliar hospital environment.
Key Insight #3

Healing and Feeling
Since the garden provides both physical, mental, and spiritual healing, it shifts the patient care dynamic to a more holistic and inclusive style of medical care. Patient care that assists in treating patient's emotional well-being and mental health through the calming nature filled environment. The garden is also a space for patients to take a stress relieving stroll in the indoor or outdoor part of the hospital garden. In addition the educational meal cards, given to patients with their meals will provide the educational component to healthy lifestyle changes.
